Tax season is one of the few times during the year when a low-income working family will receive a lump sum amount of money to put towards savings, reducing debt, etc. The Nashville Alliance for Financial Independence (NAFI) is an initiative of United Way of Metropolitan Nashville and actively seeking volunteers to help working families in Davidson County to make the most of this opportunity.
Description
Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) free tax preparation sites are seeking volunteers to speak one-on-one with taxpayers about some additional resources that are available to help them to use their refund wisely and take advantage of other resources that can help them to “Earn It. Keep It. Save It.”
Some of the things that these asset coaches will be doing are:
- Helping to screen for public benefits (such as food stamps and child care).
- Informing taxpayers about the new opportunity to purchase Savings Bonds with their refunds.
- Open “second chance” bank accounts so that families can avoid check cashing and money order fees.
Skills/Experience Required:
Ideal volunteers feel comfortable navigating the Internet. They should also be friendly, patient, have good communication skills, and able to work in a fast-paced environment. Training is provided.
When/Where:
Asset Coaches will be needed from the end of January through mid-April at the following VITA sites:
- New Level CDC in Antioch
- New Level CDC in North Nashville
- East Nashville Super VITA site
- Sam Levy Community Career Center in East Nashville
Volunteer times vary by site but volunteer slots are available during day, evening, and Saturday hours.
