Tax season is one of the few times during the year when a low-income working family will receive a lump sum amount of money to put towards savings, reducing debt, etc. The Nashville Alliance for Financial Independence (an initiative of United Way of Metropolitan Nashville) is seeking volunteers to help working families in Davidson County to make the most of this opportunity by offering free tax preparation options.
Description
Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites are seeking volunteers to help guide taxpayers through an online, do-it-yourself tax preparation program (similar to TurboTax). Taxpayers will use this online, do-it- yourself preparation tool at the VITA sites as an additional option to having taxes prepared by a certified VITA volunteer.
Activities include:
- Invite taxpayers waiting in line to take advantage of the online, do-it-yourself tool, which will be available at a computer kiosk at the VITA site.
- Help taxpayer to navigate through the website and/ or provide data entry for a taxpayer who does not feel comfortable typing.
Skills/Experience Required:
Ideal volunteers are Internet-savvy and feel comfortable using a computer and printer. They should be friendly, patient, and able to work in a fast-paced environment. These volunteers will NOT be allowed to answer tax law questions; therefore, they are not required to complete any tax law training.
When/Where:
Self-Preparation Coaches are needed from the end of January through mid-April at the following locations:
- New Level CDC in Antioch
- New Level CDC in North Nashville
- Sam Levy Community Career Center in East Nashville
- Woodbine Community Organization in South Nashville
Volunteer times vary by site but volunteer time slots are available during day, evening, and weekend hours. Additionally, we will be taking do-it-yourself, online filing kiosks throughout the city at various locations for short-term visits.
