Nashville Predators and Read to Succeed
Anytime is a good time to read! Nashville Predators staffers Gina Maduri, Jessica Jones and Allison Quillan recently took time out of their busy day to participate in a Read to Succeed classroom at St. Mary Villa. Each read aloud to a group of preschoolers, bringing the stories to life and engaging their young listeners with enthusiasm and passion. Read to Succeed is an early childhood literacy initiative spearheaded by United Way of Metropolitan Nashville and its partners; Read to Succeed teachers work with low-income preschoolers and their families to develop the language and literacy skills necessary for success in kindergarten (while at the same time laying the foundation for success in later grades, too). The Read to Succeed curriculum helps teachers at ten United Way-funded day care centers learn how to incorporate reading and writing opportunities throughout their classroom day. It’s more than simply reading a book during circle time — teachers and their students bring a story to life in ways that build vocabulary, comprehension and enthusiasm. Whether they are acting out a story with props, or retelling one on their own, the children are honing their literacy skills. Most recent testing results show a 99.4% success rate for participating children. Thank you, Gina, Jessica and Allison, for helping these kids read to succeed!
