Tocqueville Reception at Waller Lansden
December 8, 2009 was an historical, magical evening. For that is the night Waller Lansden Dortch and Davis generously hosted and underwrote a reception honoring Dr. Thomas F. Frist, Jr. founder of United Way of Metropolitan Nashville’s Tocqueville Society, and its renaming as the Alpha Chapter. The groundwork laid that evening — for the growth of the Tocqueville Society and the impact that growth will have in our community — is beyond measure. Mindful of the tremendous need for health and human services among Nashville’s low-income citizens, Dr. Frist founded the Alexis de Tocqueville Society in 1981 to spur greater philanthropic giving in support of United Way’s efforts to answer those needs. His outstanding leadership and untiring commitment assured success for not only the local chapter but inspired a national United Way of America movement as well. Today there are more than 400 Alexis de Tocqueville Societies in United Ways across the United States with more than 24,000 annual members recorded. Through Dr. Frist’s extraordinary vision, the Alexis de Tocqueville Society has become the standard bearer of leadership giving for United Ways across the country.
