Students and Teachers Thank Volunteers for Successful Start
October 18, 2011United Way of Metropolitan Nashville volunteers made the difference for more than 400 students at Napier Elementary School, who were welcomed on the first day of school with backpacks filled with school supplies.
More than 80 volunteers from UPS®, Waller Lansden Dortch & Davis LLP, SunTrust Bank, CAT® Financial joined United Way Board members and staff on August 11, 2011, to distribute the backpacks. The event was so successful that every student at Napier Elementary received a backpack.
Not only did students receive supplies, through the generous donation of a United Way Board member, Napier teachers also received a year’s worth of supplies, providing resources that support quality instruction.
“We’re excited about the continued support United Way provides as our partner in the community. The first day of the school year sets the tone for the entire year, and with United Way’s help, these kids are off to a great start,” said Dr. Ronald Powe, Principal at Napier Elementary.
This was the second event in 2011 where volunteers from around the city joined Untied Way to help ensure Nashville’s neediest students were prepared for school. In July, United Way held the Stuff the Bus Day of Action at McGruder Family Resource Center, where 200 volunteers donated their time to stock 2,600 backpacks with more than 25,000 critical school supplies. The backpacks were distributed to 48 United Way Family Resource Centers and partner agencies.
