United Way Announces 2010 Dr. Thomas F. Frist Jr. Excellence in Volunteer Leadership Award
October 05, 2010[NASHVILLE, TN] October 5, 2010—Michael Carter, President and CEO of Athena Health Club & Day Spa, and President of Athena Health Sphere LLC, was awarded the 2010 Dr. Thomas F. Frist Jr. Excellence in Volunteer Leadership Award.
United Way Of Metropolitan Nashville presented the award at its annual Alexis de Tocqueville Society Banquet Tuesday, October 5th.
“It is an honor to be recognized by an organization that does so much to improve lives. We must keep working and continue to give. Our work is not over,” Michael Carter said.
Over the years, Carter has demonstrated exemplary attendance and leadership through active volunteerism in all aspects of United Way. Carter has been an active member of United Way Board of Trustees from since 2005, and was chair the board in 2008. He was on the Marketing Committee in 2009, and in 2008, he was on the RH Board of Advisory Committee and the Board Succession Planning Committee. In 2006, he was on the Board Governance Committee. Also, from 2006 through 2008, he was active in the Campaign Cabinet; from 2005-2007, he was active in the Finance Committee Member; and from 2002-2003, he was a member of the Volunteer Review Team Member.
“He has provided quiet, behind the scenes leadership on several issues for which he showed courage and leadership integrity for United Way,” 2009 United Way of Metropolitan Nashville Board Chair, Tony Heard said.
The Frist Award was established in 1996 to honor the extraordinary achievements and volunteer excellence exemplified by Dr. Thomas Frist in his service to our community through United Way. It recognizes individuals who have provided extensive support and volunteer service to United Way of Metropolitan Nashville; furthered United Way’s mission and played a variety of roles with United Way; demonstrated an overall commitment to United Way through committee work, leadership positions, and tenure; and made and impact on United Way or the community at large through his or her involvement.
The recipient is chosen from a pool of nominees submitted by Tocqueville member, the board of trustees and other community leaders. An Ad hoc committee task force comprised of board of trustee members, appointed by the board chair, selects the recipient after significant research and deliberation.

The United Way Tocqueville Society was named after the French historian Alexis de Tocqueville, who admired Americans and their unique spirit of giving. Founded in 1981 by Dr. Tommy Frist, Jr., membership has grown from one Society in Nashville, TN with 24 donors giving just over $500,000 to a nationwide United Way movement of 28,207 donors contributing $500 million annually.
