The United Way of Metropolitan Nashville has launched its 2011 impact campaign.

This year’s push, the organization’s 90th annual campaign, aims to raise more than $15 million to support education, financial stability and health initiatives.

The following are excerpts from a United Way press release:

“The big issues across our city and throughout our community are shared by all Nashvillians, and United Way is working to impact lives in a way that addresses these priority issues of education, financial stability and health,” said United Way of Metropolitan Nashville Board Chair Margaret Dolan. “The economy this year presents some unique challenges, but over recent months we have redefined our value by strengthening partnerships, boosting innovation and delivering a remarkable return on investment. ”

The corporate community is responding enthusiastically, Dolan said, with many of Nashville’s top companies – such as Ingram, Genesco, Cat Financial, Fifth Third Bank, Publix and Target – reporting double digit increases in their employee participation compared to last year’s results.

“We are off to an excellent start with some of Nashville’s leading companies stepping up to make an even greater impact on our city’s needs,” said Genesco President Bob Dennis, chairman of this year’s United Way campaign, which will formally run through the end of the year. “Now is the time for everyone in the community to join together to improve the lives of our most vulnerable.”

Through this campaign, United Way is seeking to grow its impact on the community as the economic downturn lingers. Last year, United Way’s direct identifiable return on investment of nearly $50 million, including $18.1 million invested in agencies and programs, $14 million returned to low-income working families through United Way’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, and $13.8 million attracted by agencies from other sources as a result of United Way’s support.
