United Way offers free online filing for taxpayers earning less than $58,000

February 17, 2010

NASHVILLE, Tenn., February 17, 2010 - Through a grant with Wal-mart, One Economy and United Way Worldwide, United Way of Metropolitan Nashville is able to offer free, do-it-yourself, online tax filing as part of its free tax prep program this year. The service is available to eligible taxpayers who earn less than $58,000 a year.

To launch the service, several United Way campaign companies are offering the free service on-site to their employees February 18 - 27. United Way is also offering it during a special “appreciation” day for employees of their partner agencies on Wednesday, February 17. At each location, an IRS-trained volunteer will be on hand to answer tax code questions, along with trained volunteers to show people step-by-step how to file taxes online.

The public has three options to access the free, online filing service:

•United Way of Metropolitan Nashville will offer the service at their office in Metro Center on February 18 and 19 between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. An IRS-trained volunteer will be on hand to answer tax code questions, along with trained volunteers to show people step-by-step how to file taxes online. Call Renee Henderson at 780-2472 for more information.

•Free online filing will be available throughout the tax season at four of Nashville’s 18 VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) sites. Call 2-1-1 for locations, hours and detailed information about what documents to bring.

•The free, online filing tool can also be accessed by taxpayers at
http://www.unitedwaynashville.org/taxes.

United Way estimates that $25 million in tax credits is being left unclaimed by Nashvillians. The free online service helps taxpayers get back the full value of their refund — without losing part of it to commercial fees or rapid refund loans.

Because of its leadership and success in the area of free tax preparation, United Way of Metropolitan Nashville was one of only 20 United Ways in the country selected by the Wal-mart Foundation to receive $35,000 grants to implement self-preparation, online filing tools with its existing free tax preparation program. Seventy-one other United Ways received grants of lesser amounts.

United Way is focused on the building blocks for a better life: education, income, health and neighborhoods. The VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) program, including the new, free online filing service, is part of the nonprofit’s efforts to help working families achieve financial stability.
