United Way Volunteers Build Stronger Neighborhoods With Clean-up Effort
June 12, 2009NASHVILLE, Tenn., As part of a United Way Day of Action, nearly 75 volunteers, community residents, and United Way staff worked together on May 30 to conduct clean-ups in areas served through United Way of Metropolitan Nashville’s “building strong neighborhoods” programming. The area is served through Neighborhoods Resource Center, a United Way of Metropolitan Nashville partner agency.
Residents of disadvantaged neighborhoods often don’t have the resources or experience they need to affect positive change. Residents of areas served by United Way-funded “building strong neighborhoods” programming are twice as likely to not have high school diplomas, compared to Davidson County residents overall. In addition, 29% are below the poverty level. United Way is working to change these conditions through programs that help train and empower residents to improve conditions — such as codes violations, drug trafficking, public transportation and truancy — on their own.
In addition to partnering with Neighborhoods Resource Center, United Way of Metropolitan Nashville also coordinated with Cumberland River Compact, City of Metro Nashville, Radnor Neighborhood Association, and SNAP (South Nashville Action People) to offer the volunteer opportunity.
