The Nashville Wealth Building Alliance (NWBA) is a broad-based collaboration dedicated to promoting financial stability for low- and moderate-income individuals and families of Nashville/Davidson County. The coalition engages business, community, government and faith-based organizations to provide direct services and create linkages that will enable struggling families in the community achieve new levels of self-sustaining financial independence.
Partners in the NWBA include:
- United Way of Metropolitan Nashville
- The Federal Reserve Bank, Atlanta Branch
- Congressman Jim Cooper’s Office
- The Internal Revenue Service
- First Tennessee Foundation
- Metro Action Commission
- Metropolitan Government of Nashville/Davidson County
- Metro Housing and Development Association
- Metro Social Services
- The Nashville Area Tennessee Saves Coalition
- U.S. Community Credit Union
- Bank of America
- Capital Bank & Trust
- Mt. Zion Baptist Church
- Madison First Baptist Church
- Suntrust Bank
- US Bank
- And many more, including local financial institutions and non-profit agencies
The first initiative of the NWBA is the “Earn It. Keep It. Save It.” Campaign, which promotes the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA).
Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC)
The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) is a refundable tax credit available to working families and individuals. The IRS estimates that $8 million in EITC refunds is left on the table every year in Nashville/Davidson County when taxpayers are eligible but don’t file.
This money can make a huge difference to a family living paycheck to paycheck, making it possible for them do things that many of us take for granted: repair the family car, get needed medical or dental attention, pay for quality childcare, or pay past due rent to avoid eviction.

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)
To help ensure that Nashville’s working families are filing for the tax credits they have earned and to help those families save hundreds of dollars in commercial tax fees and predatory “rapid refund” loans, the NWBA supports Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA).
Families all over the city making a household income of less than $40,000 can access VITA sites and have their taxes prepared for FREE!

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance is also a great volunteer opportunity in which you can help low-income working families where they need it most, in the pocketbook. Last year more than 130 volunteers were needed and this year the need is even greater.

Economic Impact
The Nashville Wealth Building Alliance (NWBA) sponsored a study to identify the impact of the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) to Nashville's economy. The completed study, The State of the Earned-Income Tax Credit in Nashville: An Analysis of Economic Impacts and Geographic Distribution of the 'Working Poor' Tax Credit, TY 1997-2004, shows that the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) is not only a benefit for the working family claiming the credit. EITC also benefits the Nashville economy. The "ripple effect" from EITC refunds spent within Davidson County produces millions of dollars each year in economic stimulus, creates hundreds of jobs due to increased demand for products and services purchased with EITC refunds, and reduces poverty within our local community.
