Family Resource Centers and the Senior Patrol

In one inner-city neighborhood, the elderly get regular visits from the “senior patrol.” Under the guidance of the United Way-funded Edgehill Family Resource Center, the youth-led effort means blood pressure checks, insulin monitoring and more for homebound seniors who otherwise might go days without a visitor. “I know these kids,” says a senior who receives the service. “They’re part of the neighborhood.” Training in procedures and how to talk with seniors about their health is provided to the teens through partner agencies. United Way’s network of 13 Family Resource Centers — community hubs that offers crucial services to residents of disadvantaged neighborhoods — serves 28,000 annually.
