Meeting Basic Needs : Bernice

Bernice was having a hard time paying for her bills, food and her medication. She had no idea what type of help might be available until she called United Way 2-1-1, Middle Tennessee’s community services referral help line. She really needed her diabetes medication but had to go to a doctor for a test first, which she had been told would cost $60-$100. Without insurance that just wasn’t an option for her. But the information and referral specialist she talked with at 2-1-1 was able to give Bernice the addresses and phone numbers of several low-cost clinics, one of them only three blocks from her home. The specialist also provided Bernice with information on drug assistance programs and food pantries that could offer the helping hand she needed.
