Norma’s Story

Norma Mineo had been a hairdresser until rheumatoid arthritis forced her to retire. The pain became so debilitating that the normally active senior even found it difficult to keep house or cook meals for herself. “Some days all I could do was sit and cry,” she recalled. Her only options might have been giving up her home and moving to a nursing home or assisted living facility were it not for a United Way-funded program. Offered through United Way partner agency FiftyForward, the program provides seniors home visits and help with daily tasks. Norma’s case manager, Ron, has become like family she says. It’s a bond that means the difference between independence and a fate she doesn’t like to contemplate. “It’s everything to me to stay at home,” declares Norma.
