Valerie’s Story

One in five Nashville adults cannot read. Valerie Brown was one of them until she began working with volunteers at the Nashville Adult Literacy Council. A United Way partner agency, the Council helps adult learners do the sort of activities many take for granted: making a grocery list, filling out a job application, even reading to our children. Valerie’s teacher, Alice, knows firsthand how much learning to read increased the mother’s self-esteem. “She just blossomed with reading. And it’s been exciting to be a part of that.” Volunteers work three hours a week with their students. For Valerie, it’s a small investment that’s made a huge difference in her life.
