Faces of Success: Abdulla Dawood
Abdulla Dawood was unfamiliar with United Way’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Free Tax Prep program until last tax season. A recommendation from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) led him to the Woodbine VITA Free Tax Prep Site. Dawood filed his tax returns at the location and saved money on the cost of tax preparation fees.
“In previous years, I’ve paid hundreds of dollars for the services they were able to provide me in minutes,” said Dawood.
The VITA Free Tax Prep program provides free income tax preparation to individuals and families who qualify based on income. Dawood was impressed by the quality of services, as well as his overall experience.
“My VITA volunteer was extremely knowledgeable; I was in and out of the site quickly and received a $2,000 refund.”
Over the past six years, more than 73,000 clients — including Dawood — have filed their tax returns through the VITA Free Tax Prep program. Individuals and families have received more than $137 million in refunds and tax preparation fee savings during this same time period. Dawood’s refund helped him address a critical need. He knows others can also benefit from the program.
“At the time, I was moving, and my refund enabled me to find a new place to live. I hope more Middle Tennesseans give the VITA Free Tax Prep program a try in 2017. It answered all of my questions, and I’ll keep using this service in the future.”
Next tax season is quickly approaching, and it is never too early to learn about all of the important benefits the VITA Free Tax program can offer to qualified Middle Tennessee residents.
United Way is also recruiting VITA volunteers. Those who are interested are not required to have a financial background or expertise. Anyone who is comfortable with computers, has a desire to learn, and has a passion for giving back to the community can volunteer with the VITA Free Tax Prep program. If you are interested in making a difference in the financial futures of Middle Tennessee residents like Dawood, consider becoming a VITA volunteer and put dollars back in the pockets of those who need it the most.
