Faces of Success: Bart Perkey

Retiree and Nashville native Bart Perkey spends most of his time giving back to the Nashville community. When he isn’t teaching Sunday school, driving the bus for his church, or fundraising for mission trips, you can find him at a United Way VITA Free Tax Prep site.

“I’m the type of person who enjoys life more if I’m busy,” says Bart.

Although Bart worked in public health for 20 years and had no prior experience in taxes, he was encouraged by his identical twin brother to volunteer for the VITA Free Tax Prep program. Bart’s brother is a CPA and is a VITA volunteer in Knoxville.

Bart has been a VITA volunteer for three years and says his favorite part about working at the United Way Financial Independence Center at Levy Place location is the people.

“I have really enjoyed getting to know and work alongside the other volunteers. We have also had excellent leadership from United Way and so I enjoy working with those staff.”

He also loves getting to know the individuals he is helping and enjoys seeing the familiar faces who come back each year.

“Anybody who you do taxes for here really needs your assistance and they are very appreciative of what we do. Their patience and gratitude is remarkable,” says Perkey.

By volunteering, Bart loves the reward he gets from making a huge impact on other’s lives.

VITA stands for Volunteer Income Tax Assistance and is a nationwide program that runs from the end of January through mid-April. IRS-certified volunteers prepare tax returns for free for individuals & families earning less than $64,000. Last year, VITA volunteers prepared more than 15,000 returns across Middle Tennessee and returned nearly $24 million in refunds and saved clients $4 million in filing fees.

Volunteers are what make this program possible. We need tax preparers, screeners, site assistants and quality reviewers. You don’t need tax experience, just computer skills and a willingness to volunteer. Training and IRS-certification are provided by United Way.
