Faces of Success: Benjamin Mimms
Benjamin Mimms proudly served in the United States Army. After he retired from active duty, Mimms moved around for a while before settling into a position with the Veterans Health Administration. Mimms remembers one of his first encounters with United Way.
“I contributed to United Way through a workplace campaign with one of my previous employers,” said Mimms. “It’s a great organization.”
Last spring, United Way was able to help Mimms prepare and file his tax returns through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Free Tax Prep program. The VITA Free Tax Prep program provides free income tax preparation to individuals and families who qualify based on income.
“It feels good to know there are organizations like United Way in this community who help veterans and people in need.”
Over the past six years, IRS-certified volunteers have assisted more than 73,000 clients — including Mimms — with free tax preparation services through the VITA Free Tax Prep program. Individuals and families have received more than $137 million in refunds and tax preparation fee savings during this same time period. Mimms was extremely impressed with the service he received, as well as the volunteer who prepared and filed his tax returns.
“The VITA volunteers that I encountered were extremely professional; the volunteer who prepared and filed my tax returns was very knowledgeable and explained everything really well.”
In 2016, the average taxpayer spent $260 to file their tax returns at paid service providers. Mimms is thankful he was able to save money on the cost of tax preparation fees last year by utilizing the services offered at the Sam Levy VITA Free Tax Prep Site.
“These VITA locations are essential for those who need tax preparation help. The refund I received allowed me to pay bills, cover the cost of car repairs, and also enabled me to purchase a few household items. I would tell others in similar situations to use the VITA Free Tax Prep program; it’s a great service!”
If you need tax preparation in 2017 and qualify based on income, consider using United Way’s VITA Free Tax Prep program to file your tax returns. It will help you save money on the cost of tax preparation fees.
