Faces of Success: Dorothy Holman
Last tax season, Dorothy Holman needed extra money to make home repairs. She wanted to maximize her tax refund to cover the cost of the repairs and thought about paying to have her taxes prepared and filed. Her son suggested an alternative.
“I told him I spent over $100 at a paid tax preparer to file my 2015 return,” said Holman. “He had used the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Free Tax Prep program for the past three years and told me I should give it a try.”
The VITA Free Tax Prep program provides free income tax preparation to individuals and families who qualify based on income. Holman followed her son’s advice, and her entire experience was perfect.
“The VITA Free Tax Prep program saved me a lot of money. I was impressed with the knowledge of my VITA volunteer. All of the volunteers at the Sam Levy VITA Free Tax Prep Site were very friendly and helpful; they made sure they had all of my information and answered all of my questions.”
Over the past six years, more than 73,000 clients have filed their tax returns through the VITA Free Tax Prep program. Individuals and families have received more than $137 million in refunds and tax preparation fee savings during this same time period. Holman recommends the program to others who are in similar financial situations.
“Senior citizens or anyone who is living on a fixed income and wants to use a reputable service should file their tax returns through the VITA Free Tax Prep program. The volunteers do an outstanding job; for United Way to support the program and help people like me, it lets everyone know they are dealing with a fantastic organization. I think United Way does an outstanding job in the community and the services they provide are much-needed.”
Holman was able to cover the cost of her home repairs, thanks to United Way’s VITA Free Tax Prep program. The 2017 tax season is still a couple of months away, but it is never too early to learn about all of the important benefits the program has to offer.
United Way is also recruiting volunteers for the upcoming tax season. Those who are interested are not required to have a financial background or expertise. Anyone who is comfortable with computers, has a desire to learn, and has a passion for giving back to the community can volunteer with the VITA Free Tax Prep program. If you are interested in making a difference in the financial futures of Middle Tennessee residents like Holman, consider becoming a VITA volunteer and put dollars back in the pockets of those who need it the most.
