Faces of Success: Emilio Hughes
Emilio Hughes wanted to get his financial life in order. Hughes was willing to do the work; he just wasn’t sure where to begin.
“I was used to living month to month,” said Hughes. “I wasn’t getting ahead, but I was steadily falling behind.”
A referral from Metropolitan Development and Housing Agency (MDHA) led Hughes to the Nashville Financial Empowerment Center. The Nashville Financial Empowerment Center is a partnership between the Office of Mayor Megan Barry and United Way of Metropolitan Nashville that provides free 1-on-1 financial counseling to help Davidson County residents reduce debt and increase savings.
“It isn’t often that you find free help available to you. After my first session, I was confident that they could help me get back on track.”
A professional financial counselor examined Hughes’ credit history and assured him that his situation wasn’t as alarming as he thought it was. Hughes utilized information from his first session to set up a monthly budget so he could keep track of his spending.
“Now, I can look at my income before it comes in and properly dispense it. This allows me to have money left over at the end of every month.”
From 2013-2015, the Nashville Financial Empowerment Center has helped 3,700 clients like Hughes reduce their debt by $2.9 million and increase savings by $500,000. Hughes is just beginning his journey toward financial stability, but he knows the results will come.
“I can already see my way out of the tunnel. If I continue to work hard, not only will I get out, I’ll also become empowered to accomplish goals that were dreams in the past. If you are working through a financial maze, the Nashville Financial Empowerment Center can help you make a plan to help you navigate your way through.”
The partnership between the Office of Mayor Megan Barry and United Way of Metropolitan Nashville on the Nashville Financial Empowerment Center is an ideal financial stability navigation tool for Nashville residents like Hughes. If he sticks to his new financial plan, his dreams of the past will become a new reality.
