Faces of Success: Patricia Carson
Patricia Carson is a one-of-a-kind VITA client. Last year, while Patricia was waiting to be helped with her taxes, she overheard a VITA volunteer saying they needed a volunteer greeter. Patricia decided to step-in and began greeting clients at the door that very same day. Patricia enjoyed the experience so much that she continued to volunteer as a greeter for the remainder of the tax season.
“My favorite part about volunteering was meeting new people and knowing I was helping others. I loved getting to know people in the community as well as those associated with the VITA program. It was an awesome experience and a good vibe all around. The people who volunteer for VITA are great and you can tell they are doing it from the heart. It’s encouraging, especially in our society today where it seems like everybody is out for themselves. But that’s not the case for the volunteers at United Way’s VITA Free Tax Prep sites.”
Aside from volunteering, Patricia was able to utilize VITA’s free tax prep services and get her own taxes done.
“It was a huge help for me, you can’t beat it. The volunteers are very competent.”
Patricia says she will be coming back next year to get her taxes done and she hopes to continue to volunteer too.
VITA stands for Volunteer Income Tax Assistance and is a nationwide program that runs from the end of January through mid-April. IRS-certified volunteers prepare tax returns for individuals & families who qualify on income earning (less than $66,000 in 2017). Last year, VITA volunteers prepared more than 15,000 returns across Middle Tennessee and returned nearly $24 million in refunds and saved clients $4 million in filing fees.
