Faces of Success: Sandy Overstreet

Four years ago, Sandy Overstreet discovered United Way’s  VITA Free Tax Prep program.

“We received an email from the Woodbine Community Organization about the program and used it for the first time that year,” said Overstreet. “We’ve continued to come back and use the service year after year, and have always had a great experience.”

VITA stands for Volunteer Income Tax Assistance and is a nationwide program that runs from the end of January through mid-April. IRS-certified volunteers prepare tax returns for individuals & families who qualify based on income (less than $66,000 in 2017). Last year, VITA volunteers prepared 15,000 returns across Middle Tennessee and returned $19 million in refunds and saved clients $4 million in filing fees.

“Our VITA volunteer is always extremely knowledgeable; they have always answered all of our questions and put us at ease. All of the volunteers we’ve spoken with at the site have always been terrific to us. The program is amazing. It is great to know that United Way is a part of a community program that helps so many.”

Overstreet and her husband are raising their grandson Tyler who was born with special needs. The program has always ensured that the family receives all of the important credits and benefits available to them, including the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and the Child Tax Credit.

“When we first learned about the EITC and Child Tax Credit four years ago, the timing couldn’t have been better. I had lost my job and my husband was disabled. To find out this credit was available — especially when we needed it — was great.”

“It means so much to know that these credits boost our refund each year and help us take care of our grandson. This program is amazing, and I love it.”

Don’t miss out on important benefits like the EITC or Child Tax Credit this tax season. If your household earned less than $66,000 in 2017, use the VITA Free Tax Prep program to file your tax returns. VITA volunteers will help you receive all of the important benefits and credits you have earned.
