Faces of Success: Vickie Harmon
Vickie Harmon has been working with United Way’s VITA Free Tax Prep program for many years. She first heard about the program while in college at Athens State when her school counselor asked her to be the site coordinator at a VITA site in Alabama. After graduate school, Vickie relocated to Nashville and decided to get involved as a VITA volunteer again.
“In 2012 I signed up to volunteer again and I have been doing it ever since. My favorite thing about volunteering is the clients. Everyone is always so appreciative of your help and it makes the experience so rewarding. I only live a few miles from the site where I volunteer. It is an awesome feeling to know that the people I am helping are my actual neighbors.”
VITA stands for Volunteer Income Tax Assistance and is a nationwide program that runs from the end of January through mid-April. IRS-certified volunteers prepare tax returns for individuals & families who qualify based on income (earning less than $66,000 in 2017). Last year, VITA volunteers prepared more than 15,000 returns across Middle Tennessee and returned nearly $24 million in refunds and saved clients $4 million in filing fees.
“One of my favorite VITA memories over the years was a sweet couple I helped in 2012. They have been coming to the VITA sites for as long as I have been volunteering. Every time I see them they always give me a big hug and tell me how much they appreciate us.”
Volunteers are what make this program possible. We need tax preparers, screeners, site assistants and quality reviewers. You don’t need tax experience, just computer skills and a willingness to volunteer. Training and IRS-certification are provided by United Way.
